A British woman takes in an abandoned dog and gives it a second chance. A short time later, the three-legged Louie returns the favor and saves his owner’s life. He discovers that she has cancer.
Karen Ethier rescued Louie, a mastiff and Staffordshire bull terrier mix, from the shelter. At the time, he was emaciated and injured, and doctors had to amputate one of his legs. “I knew right away that I wanted to rescue him. In turn, he then saved my life as well,” the British woman tells The Daily Star.
At some point, Louie began to constantly snuggle up to her chest or nudge her. Karen wondered about her dog’s strange behavior and began to think. Eventually, she actually discovered a lump in her breast.
Shock diagnosis: dog discovers breast cancer
At her family doctor’s office, the 55-year-old then received the shocking diagnosis: the lump in her breast turned out to be an aggressive form of breast cancer. Doctors removed the tumor and she immediately began chemotherapy and radiation.
Since then, Karen has been on the road to recovery. She is proud of her three-legged friend who saved her life: “Louie is the best dog there is.”
