Discovering that one of your children is missing is an unimaginable and harrowing experience for any parent. The sheer terror and helplessness that accompany such a situation are overwhelming.
Parents instinctively nurture and protect their children, making the sudden disappearance of a child, as experienced by the Leach family with their six-year-old Kaydon, a nightmarish ordeal. The added worry of his canine companion, Chula, also being missing intensified the already heightened fear and panic.
The alarm was raised on the night of April 23, prompting officials to commence a search at 7 pm. A hundred individuals joined forces, committing to scouring the area throughout the night and into the following Tuesday. The Bureau of Investigation for Blount County, Tennessee, declared Kaydon an ‘endangered child,’ prompting an exhaustive search effort covering approximately 2000 acres.
Given Kaydon’s tender age, concerns for his safety were paramount, prompting an extensive operation involving the Blount County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, a Black Hawk military helicopter, volunteer search parties, and K-9 teams.
Remarkably, after 22 hours, Kaydon was discovered halfway home at the Top of the World Community in Blount County around 3:30 pm. The presence of his loyal black and white terrier, Chula, played a crucial role in guiding rescuers to the young boy.
Chief Deputy Jeff French of the County Sheriff’s Office revealed, “The dog actually growled at the rescuers when they approached Kaydon.” When found, Kaydon was cold, prompting rescuers to wrap him in blankets and a jacket before transporting him to Blount Memorial Hospital. The family expressed profound gratitude to all involved in the search, emphasizing the overwhelming support received from both familiar faces and strangers.

In their statement, the family conveyed, “We’re so thankful to everyone, from local law enforcement agencies to volunteers, who helped us find Kaydon. The amount of support we have received has been tremendous, even from people we don’t even know. We appreciate all our friends and neighbors, and ask for privacy at this time.”
The story concludes on a positive note, with Kaydon being found safe, albeit a bit cold. It serves as a testament to the unbreakable bond between humans and their faithful companions. If this heartwarming tale resonates with you, share it to pay tribute to the remarkable role played by Chula in reuniting Kaydon with his family.
